How does a tankless water heater work compared to a standard water heater?

First of all, a tankless water heating system only heats water when it’s needed, while a standard unit is heating water all the time, even when the water is not being used. With a tankless water system, when you turn the tap on, cold water flows to the heater. The water is then picked up by a sensor that tells a gas burner to warm the heat exchanger. The cold water then circulates around the heat exchanger and goes to your tap or faucet at the temperature you set. The gases are then safely vented out of the heater.

A tankless water heater also takes up a fraction of the space of a traditional water heater. Gas fueled, tankless heaters are small and can be attached to a wall. Tankless water heaters can also be mounted outside your home, in your basement and even your garage.
